Dental implants are artificial roots inserted in the bone. After healing and once the implant integrates with the bone a prosthetic crown can be screwed to the implant to replace the missing teeth.

Current implants are made of Titanium, since this metal has good resistance and excellent biocompatibility. The implants are attached to the bone directly by a phenomenon termed "osseintegration".
